Rooted Soul is a small black-owned family kitchen a short drive down the valley in Newport. Everything we make is fully plant-based, from the first onion in the pot to the last spoon of gravy. No dairy, no meat, no powdered shortcuts and nothing bought in. We cook by hand in small batches, give the Caribbean flavours the slow time they need, then box the food in eco kraft and bring it up the valley to your door in Risca.
Saturday Soup is the one that makes most sense here. Thick, filling, made for eating after a cold morning on the hill, and ours is fully plant-based. Alongside it we do Festival, the slightly sweet fried dumplings, plus proper boiled dumplings, Beyond Beef patties in flaky pastry and Macaroni No Cheese that does the job of the real thing with no dairy in it. Jamaican Spice Bun turns up for anyone who likes something sweet with a cup of tea. Everything is cooked in small batches, so what you get is what came out of the pot that day.

Risca is not a place that goes in for fuss. Terraces climb the hillsides, Tredegar Street and Commercial Street handle the everyday shopping, and the trains from Risca and Pontymister run down to Cardiff and up to Ebbw Vale. People walk the Tump, ride the canal towpath and get on with things. We deliver across the NP11 postcode area, so Pontymister, Ty-Sign, Danygraig and up the valley to Crosskeys and Waunfawr are all on the round.
