Pill has been feeding people from somewhere else for as long as the docks have been working. Sailors came ashore at the bottom of Commercial Road and took rooms in the boarding houses around George Street and Ruperra Street, and they brought their cooking with them. One of them was a ship's cook from Jamaica who stayed and kept a grocery shop in Ruperra Street. Coal and iron went out, and the rest of the world came in. A place with that history does not need talking into new food.
Caribbean cooking landed here the same way, by boat and by people. It leans on rice, beans, coconut, thyme, allspice and Scotch bonnet, and it was built to feed a house rather than a plate. What we do at Rooted Soul is cook it entirely from plants, with no meat and no dairy anywhere in it. Take the meat out and the seasoning has to carry the whole thing, so none of it gets watered down.
Order Beyond Beef patties and you get the thing you want in one hand on the walk home, pastry, filling, done, no plate needed. Saturday Soup is thick enough to be dinner on its own. Rasta Pasta is £10 and it is the one people order when there is someone in the house who says they do not like vegan food. There is Coconut Lentil Curry at £12, Festival and dumplings for the side of the plate, and Jamaican Spice Bun when you want something sweet.

It is a short drive from our kitchen, and that matters more than it sounds. Food that is cooked, boxed and driven straight over arrives hot in the middle instead of steamed flat in the back of a van. We deliver to the streets off Commercial Road, Mendalgief Road and Alexandra Road, and around Pill Park.
We are a family business, black-owned, and we hold a 5 star Food Hygiene Rating from the FSA. The Voice Magazine has written about us. Neither of those changes how the food is made, which is by hand and in small batches. Orders go in the evening before, so nothing sits around waiting. Everything leaves in eco kraft packaging, so there is less to throw away and the boxes go straight in the fridge if you are batching for the week.
What We Deliver
Two things go out to Pill most: weekly meal prep and food for a room full of people. For meal prep, pick 3 to 5 mains and we box them separately so you can reheat one at a time. Jerk Lentils with Rice and Peas and Macaroni No Cheese both hold up well across a few days. For catering, we cook to the number of guests, whether that is a christening, a birthday at Pill Mill, a work do or a funeral tea.
