Plant-based Jamaican cooking brought out to the village, from Magor Square to the lanes running down towards the marsh.
Vegan Caribbean, Delivered
Magor has grown a fair bit without losing the feel of a village. The Square still sits around the war memorial, with the church, a few shops and the pubs all within a couple of minutes of each other, and the lanes drop away south towards the Gwent Levels and the Severn. What the village does not have is much choice on a weeknight, and a full Jamaican menu with no meat or dairy in it is a rare thing to find anywhere, let alone in a village this size.
Plenty of people here spend the working day somewhere else. The M4 runs past the village at junction 23A, and the drive back from Newport, Cardiff or Bristol tends to eat the part of the evening you would have spent cooking. Ordering the evening before takes that decision off you. Your food is cooked the next day and comes to the door ready to eat, so there is no shopping list and no washing up.
Everything on the menu is Jamaican and everything is plant-based. Rasta Pasta is a good place to start, creamy with peppers running through it. Saturday Soup is thick enough to be a meal on its own, and the Macaroni No Cheese does what you hope it does. There are Beyond Beef patties and festival if you want something to eat with your hands, plus spinach rice, vegan coleslaw and Jamaican spice bun. Jerk lentils with rice and peas is £10, and the coconut lentil curry is £12.
Why Rooted Soul
Every dish fully vegan, with no meat, no dairy and no compromise on flavour.
Family recipes and bold island flavour in every single bowl.
Cooked by hand in small batches in Newport, never mass-produced.
Delivered to Magor in eco-friendly kraft packaging, ready to heat.
We cook in Newport, roughly nine miles west of the village, so an NP26 delivery is a short run for us rather than a long haul. That matters with this kind of food. Rice and peas, and a soup that has been on the go since the morning, are much better when they land still steaming. We deliver around Magor Square and the newer estates on the edge of the village, and on into Undy next door. There is no shop to come to, so everything is brought out to you.
Magor Marsh is on the doorstep, the last real bit of fenland on the Gwent Levels, and the reserve that a group of naturalists set up in 1963 as the first for what is now Gwent Wildlife Trust. People walk the boardwalks there most weekends. We like that a village looking after a place like that might also care where its dinner comes from. Ours is cooked by hand by one family, in small batches, and it goes out in kraft packaging rather than plastic trays.
What We Deliver
Vegan meal prep in Magor usually means a set of containers for the week, five or six dinners lined up in the fridge so you are not thinking about it after work. You can order that way every week, or just the once, for a Friday night that is not the same as last Friday. We also cater, so if you are putting on a christening, a birthday or a work do, we can bring trays of jerk lentils with rice and peas, coconut lentil curry, dumplings and Jamaican fruit cake. Order the evening before, and ring 07962 816936 if you want to talk it through.
