Caribbean Food in Newport, Cooked the Family Way.

Good Caribbean food is hard to find in Newport. Rooted Soul was started to change that. We are a family-run, black-owned kitchen cooking the dishes our founder Careena grew up with, and we deliver them across every Newport postcode and out into the wider South Wales area.

Our cooking leans on the flavours that make Caribbean food what it is: allspice, thyme, ginger, Scotch bonnet, coconut, and the patience to let things simmer. Jerk seasoning is made properly. Rice and peas is cooked in coconut milk. Dumplings are kneaded by hand. Nothing comes out of a packet.

The whole menu is plant-based, which means the flavour has to carry every dish on its own, and it does. If you have never tried Caribbean food without meat, the Jerk Lentils are the place to start. They are rich, smoky and filling, and they have won over plenty of people who were sure they would miss the chicken.

Mains include Jerk Lentils with Rice and Peas at £10, Coconut Lentil Curry with dumplings at £12, Rasta Pasta at £10, Macaroni No Cheese at £10 and Saturday Soup at £10. On the side there is Festival, Dumplings, Beyond Beef Patties and Jamaican Spice Bun, and for a bigger table there is the Feast for One, The Comfort Box and Any 5 Dishes.

We also cater Caribbean food for events across South Wales, from birthdays and christenings to weddings and work lunches, from £18 per person.
